“To 1st and 2nd year civil engineering students:

You are invited by the school to a Town Hall meeting the cohort of year 1 and year 2 civil engineering students, on Wednesday 13 October (11am for year 2 and 11:45am for year 1).

The aim of the meeting is to have an informal discussion about how the semester is going so far and whether there are any issues that you would like to raise.

A few academics from our school will be invited to the meeting although NOT coordinators of units currently being taught to your cohort – this is in order to help in having a frank, constructive and respectful discussion about your studies so far.

Do you have a passion for structural engineering?

🏙️ Are you interested in structural behaviour and design under buckling?

Want to fast-track your knowledge on steel structures?

SUCE is proud to announce the fourth event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, with Prof. Kim Rasmussen.

🦺 Prof. Kim Rasmussen is Deputy Dean at the School of Civil Engineering and conducts research in structural engineering. His research areas are theoretical and experimental structural mechanics with particular expertise in steel structural members and systems, cold-formed steel structures, stainless steel structures, aluminium structures, and structural stability and analysis.

Buckling is a significant factor for engineers that design steel structures as it is a sudden change in the shape of a structural component under load. Hear from Prof. Rasmussen on how he works to make the metal structures that surround us safer, more efficient, and more economical.

Failure theories are used to predict when a material will fail due to static loading. They do this by comparing the stress state at a point with material properties that can be easily determined from testing, like the yield or ultimate strengths of the material determined from a uniaxial test.
