Dispersion in the Urban Environment | Academic Seminar #5

☁️ What is dispersion and why is it a problem?

🔥 Ever wondered what happens to the smoke from bushfires?

🌬️ What about the mechanics behind how smoke is able to travel hundreds of kilometers?

📖 SUCE is proud to announce the final event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, with Dr. Kapil Chauhan, presenting 'Dispersion in the urban environment'.

🧑‍🏫 In this seminar, students will be introduced to the problem of dispersion. A well-known example in Australia is the smoke from bushfires travelling hundreds of kilometers. This seminar will explain why dispersion is a significant problem and the associated challenges. We will then look at current engineering practices and some of the future opportunities in this field of civil engineering.

The End of Traffic and The Future of Access | Academic Seminar #3

🚃 Ever wondered how technology has changed transport over the decades?

💉 Or how COVID-19 impacted travel demands?

🛫 How will we respond to save the future of transport?

📖 SUCE is proud to announce the third event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, 'The End of Traffic and the Future of Access' with Prof. David Levinson.

🕑 Two decades into the new millennium, transport is becoming interesting again. New technologies are taking root and society is responding; together, these phenomena are changing how people access places and exchange goods. This talk about the future of transport in cities discusses the implications of automation, electrification, sharing, and COVID-19 on travel demands and transport policy.

The World Trade Center | Academic Seminar #2

Zoom link: https://uni-sydney.zoom.us/j/84812782445

🏢 Ever wondered how strong our skyscrapers really are?

💭 Wondered how much time do we really have to escape a building?

📏 Considered how our 'best friend' can help us design to prevent disasters?

📖 SUCE is proud to announce the second event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, 'Learning from disasters' with Tim Wilkinson.

🕒 The “thirty-year rule” often refers to the generational gap in the engineering community when the impact or memory of a major disaster starts to lose its immediacy and memory.

We will consider a variety of disasters in the last 200 years, in particular the World Trade Centre, and what we have learned from them.

🛬 The attack on the World Trade Centres claimed the lives of 3000 people and shook an entire generation. We will retrace the path on how the WTC collapsed despite surviving impacts from a Boeing 767 travelling at full speed. How did the material and structural design contribute to the collapse and what key lessons in structural, material, and risk management can we learn from it?

😉 Don' forget your best friend!

Academic Seminar #1

Academic Seminar # 1 (3).png

🥣 Do you like crunchy things?

💭 Ever enjoyed the sound of crushing stuff?

⏳ Interested in exploring what happens to crunchy materials under load?

📖 SUCE is proud to announce the very first event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, Crunchy things with François Guillard. This talk will explore the emergence and characteristics of those instabilities on crunchy materials as well as geomaterials.

🎓 François is a lecturer at the School of Civil Engineering. His research aims at understanding the behaviour of granular materials and brittle porous media such as sand and puffed rice from experiments, numerical simulations, and modeling.

👨‍🏫 Brittle porous media encompass a wide range of common materials, such as sand, bones, and breakfast cereals. Given the use of these materials, instabilities have an important impact on the long-term reliability of structures and equipment as they exhibit specific behaviours under load and when degraded.

We are looking forward to seeing you on Zoom!
