SUCE - Week 10

Keywords: AS#5.

What is dispersion and why is it a problem?

Ever wondered what happens to the smoke from bushfires?

🌬️ What about the mechanics behind how smoke is able to travel hundreds of kilometers?

SUCE is proud to announce the final event of our Academic Seminar PEP Package, with Dr. Kapil Chauhan, presenting 'Dispersion in the urban environment'.

🧑‍ In this seminar, students will be introduced to the problem of dispersion. A well-known example in Australia is the smoke from bushfires travelling hundreds of kilometers. This seminar will explain why dispersion is a significant problem and the associated challenges. We will then look at current engineering practices and some of the future opportunities in this field of civil engineering.

The case of the Tacoma Narrows bridge is a well-known cautionary tale that’s discussed in engineering and physics classrooms across the world. Both resonance from vortex shedding and aeroelastic flutter contributed to the failure. When you push the envelope, you have to be vigilant because things that didn’t matter before start to become important (e.g. wind loads on lighter structures). Unanticipated challenges are a cost of innovation and that’s something that we can all keep in mind.
